And deeper and deeper into the soul of Peter Morrow. Together with his former second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, and Myrna Landers, they journey deeper and deeper into Québec. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. While Gamache doesn’t talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. The Publisher Says: Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he’d only imagined possible. But the effect is that it feels like a lot of reporting packaged together, some of it pursuing a historical theme, but much of it quite random. He doesn't hide it, writing about his reporting experience in China, so it's not a surprise. Nov 24, Piotr rated it liked it Shelves: reviewed. Oh well, I will let Peter come first! In many ways, he needs little introduction: there are Oudolf meadows up and down the country, from Scampston Hall and RHS Wisley to Trentham Gardens, all showcasing his complex, highly naturalistic schemes. “I like to escape some of the rules around gardening – to provide thought and spontaneity, and pleasure.” They rip up the flowerbed rule book and roll out, often over vast spaces. The plant combinations are dynamic and playful: you are as likely to go and admire decaying seed heads in winter as you are spring blossom. His designs offer up something wild and alive. Many of his gardens may be in hip locations or attached to big-name architects, but the reason people return again and again is his planting. Folks flock to them, whether it’s the High Line in New York, the meadows at Hauser & Wirth’s art gallery in Somerset, or the Olympic Park in Stratford, to name a few. P iet Oudolf’s landscapes are as peopled as they are planted. |
